Ciro Immobile could make history this evening, as the Lazio striker can become Capocannoniere, win the Golden Boot and break the all-time Serie A season scoring record.
The Biancocelesti visit Napoli at the Stadio San Paolo, which is also where the record of 36 goals was set by Gonzalo Higuain with his hat-trick against Frosinone in May 2016.
Immobile goes into the match with 35 goals under his belt for this season, already four clear of Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo on 31.
It’s reported Ronaldo will be rested for tonight’s match against Roma, which would mean Immobile can be crowned Golden Boot winner before even setting foot on the pitch.
Immobile managed to overtake Bayern Munich hitman Robert Lewandowski, who ended the Bundesliga with 34 goals this season.
The only player who can catch him now is Ronaldo, whose Juve face Roma tonight.
As for the all-time Serie A record, Higuain achieved that for Napoli with 36 goals in 35 matches during the 2015-16 campaign.
So far, Immobile has hit 35 goals in 36 appearances.
It’s also worth noting that the Lazio forward has converted 14 penalties, compared to just three for Higuain in that record-setting run.
Higuain broke the record set by Milan legend Gunnar Nordahl of 35 goals in the 1949-50 season.
Even if he doesn’t score tonight, Immobile is already by far the most prolific Italian in a Serie A season, smashing Luca Toni’s tally of 31 for Fiorentina in 2005-06.
